Wildfire Evacuation Checklist

Complete before fire season. Review annually.

Before Fire Season

  • Create defensible space (30ft around home)
  • Clear gutters, roof, and deck of leaves/debris
  • Trim tree branches within 10ft of chimney
  • Store important documents in fireproof safe or digitally
  • Know 2+ evacuation routes from your neighborhood
  • Identify rally point for family outside evacuation zone

Go-Bag Essentials

  • N95 masks for each family member
  • Prescription medications (7-day supply)
  • Phone chargers and portable battery pack
  • Cash and credit cards
  • Copies of IDs, insurance, and medical records
  • Change of clothes and sturdy shoes per person
  • Water bottles and non-perishable snacks
  • Pet carrier, food, and leash

When Evacuation Is Ordered

  • Load go-bag into vehicle immediately
  • Close all windows, doors, and vents
  • Turn off gas at the meter
  • Leave lights on (helps firefighters see in smoke)
  • Move flammable furniture away from windows
  • Take irreplaceable items (photos, heirlooms)
  • Text your out-of-area emergency contact
  • Check on neighbors who may need help

Vehicle Readiness

  • Gas tank kept above half at all times
  • Engine air filter clean
  • Emergency kit in trunk (water, blanket, flashlight)
  • Paper maps of evacuation routes (GPS may fail)
  • Car seats / boosters installed and ready
  • Charger cable in vehicle

After Evacuation

  • Do NOT return until authorities say it's safe
  • Document damage with photos for insurance
  • Check for hotspots and embers before entering home
  • Test water before drinking (contamination risk)
  • Contact insurance company within 24 hours
